Barbara Adams was walking her dog, Samson, at Philadelphia’s Wissahickon Valley Park this week when the pup became preoccupied by a trash bag beneath a bridge.

“I turned around and my dog was sniffing at this black plastic bag and when I looked closer there was a dog’s head sticking out of it,” Adams told the Pennsylvania SPCA, the Philly Voice reported. “She was looking at me with very, very sad eyes. I was like, ‘Oh my gosh! Oh my gosh! What do I do?’”

Adams placed a call to PSPCA’s Humane Law Enforcement Team; two officers were dispatched to investigate.

The female dog, since named Cranberry, was transported back to the PSCPA shelter in an emaciated state. She’s listed in guarded condition.

“In these cases, it’s the first 48 hours, the first few days, that are the most important to ensure that the animal survives,” Nicole Wilson, Director of PSPCA’s Humane Law Enforcement, told the Philly Voice. “Our goal is to make sure that not only does the animal survive but that we find who’s responsible for this horrific act of cruelty.”

PSPCA has set up a donation page for the public to help with Cranberry’s recovery.

Anyone with information about the person or persons responsible for dumping Cranberry is asked to call the PSPCA’s cruelty hotline at 866-601-7722.
